July 29, 2026: a tiny VIVK lesson, and the SK Hynix pair that actually cost me the day
My routine barely changes. Before the bell I open my pre-market gainers list and hunt the small, cheap names that move fast the second the market opens. The plan is always the same: get in, catch a quick move, get out. This morning the little scalp went how I expected — and then a leveraged position I had no business sizing the way I did quietly ate the whole day.
The small self-inflicted one: VIVK
VIVK was up in the pre-market around $2.76, the kind of low-float mover I look for. When 9:30 hit it was already rolling over and the RSI was fading — my own signal telling me the momentum wasn't there. I bought anyway, around $2.66, 2,000 shares, and it did nothing good. I cut it almost immediately for about a -$11 scratch. Small money, but the same old mistake: I read the tape correctly and traded against it.
The eleven dollars don't matter. What matters is that I saw the signal and overrode it. That's a habit I have to break before it shows up in a name where the loss isn't rounding-error small.
Where the day really went: the SK Hynix pair
Here's the honest part of the session. SK Hynix had been sliding even after posting record earnings — a blowout quarter that still got sold because it wasn't quite good enough for Wall Street's expectations — and I decided to trade the swings through leveraged products instead of the plain stock. I took SKHU, the 2x leveraged fund, around $12.47 on 800 shares, and I also played the downside with SKHZ, the inverse fund, on 900 shares. Between the two of them I lost -$468 on the day: about -$390 in SKHU and -$78 in SKHZ.
Read that back: I lost on both the long and the short version of the same stock. That's not a directional miss — that's the leverage and the chop taxing me on both sides while I flipped in and out. A small +$47 scalp in TSLG, the 2x Tesla fund, was the only green on the board, and it barely registered against the SK Hynix bleed.
Add it up and it's a -$433 day, which drops my running total for this stretch to about -$1,450. Almost none of it came from my actual scalping method — it came from oversizing leveraged ETFs I keep telling myself I can trade cleanly. (For the record, my slow long-term core is a separate bucket and isn't part of these day-trade figures.) I'm holding a small SKHU position into tomorrow's pre-market hoping for a bounce; we'll see if that's conviction or just me refusing to take the loss. Tomorrow I reset.
